IPM(Isoprene)

Overview
From a technical perspective the C5 stream contains three primary diolefin components ; namely ; isoprene, cyclopentadiene and piperylene The boiling ranges of all the C5 components also are close together from around 25℃ to 40℃. A strategy is needed to separate these components for further conversion. Thankfully cyclopentadiene contained in the stream readily dimerizes into dicyclopentadiene when the C5 stream is heated. This creates a stream of high boilers. Some of the low boilers including piperylene, can be separated through fractionation and the stream is usually supplied as a 65 percent concentrate. Isoprene, however, requires extractive distillation for its separation from an isoprene heart-cut. The C5 components are very reactive and so careful process control is needed to facilitate these separation steps.


Applications
The isoprene value chain is heavily directed to elastomers. Even today butyl rubber is become increasingly commoditized. As elastomers the focus remains on tires, ultimately serving the mass transit industry. There are some more specialized applications, such as those found in the medical sector ranging from surgical gloves to tubing, including catheters, as well as certain hygiene products.
