PIP (Piperylene)

Overview
From a technical perspective the C5 stream contains three primary diolefin components ; namely ; isoprene, cyclopentadiene and piperylene The boiling ranges of all the C5 components also are close together from around 25℃ to 40℃. A strategy is needed to separate these components for further conversion. Thankfully cyclopentadiene contained in the stream readily dimerizes into dicyclopentadiene when the C5 stream is heated. This creates a stream of high boilers. Some of the low boilers including piperylene, can be separated through fractionation and the stream is usually supplied as a 65 percent concentrate. Isoprene, however, requires extractive distillation for its separation from an isoprene heart-cut. The C5 components are very reactive and so careful process control is needed to facilitate these separation steps.


Applications
The use of piperylene for anhydride-based epoxy resin curing agents appears to be very specific to China and serves the growing electronics industry for printing circuit boards.
When piperylene is used a solid anhydride is first made, but the product can isomerize to make an easier to use liquid product.
